Dr David Strong B.Sc.(Hons.), D.Phil.(Oxon.), C.Eng. FCIBSE, FEI

Between 2007 and Sept. 2010 David Strong was Chief Executive of Inbuilt Consulting Ltd specialising in sustainable building design, consultancy and research. Between 1998 and 2007 he was Managing Director of the UK Building Research Establishment (BRE) Environment Division, with responsibility for 300 staff in five major centres of expertise; Sustainable Development, Housing, Sustainable Energy Centre (formerly BRECSU, which delivered the UK governments Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme), Environmental Consultancy and the BREEAM Centre.

Prior to this he was an Executive Director of the following companies; E A Technology (formerly the Electricity Research Centre, Capenhurst), Emstar (formerly Shell’s contract energy management company, now Dalkia) and W S Atkins and Partners, Epsom.  

Originally a graduate of Bath University in Building Engineering, he was awarded a doctorate by Oxford University in 1980 for his development of a directly fired heat pump. Since 2002 he has been an Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham, School of Architecture & the Built Environment and in December 2012 he was also appointed a Visiting Professor at Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development. In February 2010 David was appointed Chairman of the Energy Efficiency Partnership for Buildings. David was also Chairman of the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive Implementation Advisory Group (DIAG) and acts as a special advisor to the European Commission on energy demand issues.  In 2007 he Chaired the Quality of Life Challenge, Built Environment Group (the findings/recommendations were published in “A Blueprint for a Green Economy”). He was a member of the 2012 Olympic Village and Stratford City Environment Review Panel. In November 2010 he was invited Greg Barker MP, Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change to Chair a Ministerial Advisory Group on Green Deal Installer Accreditation and Qualification. From 2015 until 2021 Chairman of REAL Energy Assurance Ltd. (REAL undertakes administration of of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code and renewable energy Certification Schemes)

He was presented with the 2007 Building Sustainability Leadership award for establishing the UK Green Building Council, with the judges describing him as “one of the most influential figures in the drive to make the industry sustainable”.
